CoB History

City of Birmingham Basketball ClubWhilst it was officially formed as a Club in 2003 the roots of  CoB go back to the 1980s with many of the key people having been Volunteers involved in Basketball Development in Birmingham as players and Coaches since that time.

When Nechells Basketball Centre for the development of basketball in Birmingham opened in 2003 it was decided that a Club to co-ordinate the work undertaken there was needed and so CoBJBC was formed.

From the start it was decided that the Club needed to:

  • provide England Basketball (EB) Qualified Coaches
  • provide opportunities for boys and girls up to the age of 18 and, as and when possible financially, to provide opportunities beyond the age of 18
  • enter teams from U13 to U18 in the National England Basketball Leagues
  • develop relationships with schools in the area and offer Basketball awareness to local Primary Schools
  • hold Open Trials each year so that ANYONE interested in Basketball could have an opportunity to further their talents
  • develop our players from a young age and continue that development as they progress through the age groups in the club
  • provide Coaching and Game opportunities at the lowest possible cost commensurate with the use of a high standard of facilities.
  • keep costs low none of the Coaches or Volunteers are paid: all give their time out of a commitment to develop Basketball in the area.
  • and, most importantly, to provide a welcoming, friendly and sociable Club in which all members are treated with respect, as individuals and enabled to develop their Basketball to the highest level possible.

Over the last few years CoB have had many teams at different Age Groups make the National Play-Offs and some their Final Four Weekends. We have also had over 10 players selected for England Age Group Squads and Teams.

As an example of our success this year (2009/10) we have 10 teams ranging from U13 to U18 covering Boys and Girls playing in the England Basketball Leagues, 17 Qualified Coaches including 4 at Level 3 (the highest EB level) and over 130 players registered with EB. Force, the girls section of CoB, has entered a Division 2 Ladies team this year and discussions are underway for Cobras, the boys section, to do so next year.
