Coach Kinch Reports:

22 Jan 2012: Derby Trailblazers 27 City of Birmingham 78

A much better start than previous games! We were 12 points up before Derby scored due to a good defensive performance. We held Derby to 8 points or lesss in each quarter. Still alot of work to do but we are getting better; we need to move the ball quicker on offence.
1st qtr 8-23  2nd qtr 7-14 3rd qtr 7-21 4th qtr 5-20

14 Jan 2012: Mansfield Giants 14  City of Birmingham 106

A much better game with much better defence. We ran the fast break well and our level of play was much improved. The game was won in first quarter and in 2nd half we stopped fast breaking and ran our offences,
1st qtr 6-34  2nd qtr 2-32  3rd qtr 6-20 4th qtr 2-20

7th Jan 2012: City of Birmingham 56 Shropshire Warriors 55
First game after christmas and we were very poor - poor defence and we could'nt finish on offence, but we managed to come out with a win. Shropshire made it hard for us but we saw the game out.
We went behind by 10 points in the first quarter, pulled it back in the second, but struggled in the second half of the game.
1st qtr 5-15  2nd 23-8  3rd qtr 12-11  4th qtr 16-21

Mid-season report:

The Under 13s have had to endure a quick and steep learning curve during 2011 but have done so excellently.
Having had a good pre-season, the group worked hard in training, with help from Coach Douglas and Coach Gordon. Many of the players were new to National League Basketball, with only a few of players playing in last year's team. Although some of the boys had progressed through our development program, the majority were new.
Our off season was disrupted a little with players being recruited later than we would have liked although by September we had soon picked up additional players to boost our squad. Regular practice is crucial to our success - we have had a problem in getting all players at training at the same time on occasions, which is something we will have to address in the New Year.
The season started with 3 good wins, our players improved with every game as confidence built. This was followed by 2 losses, first to Wolverhampton, which was a close game, then to Notts Nova with only 8 players. I am confident we can produce better displays in the return fixtures as our squad develops.
After our 2 losses the team picked themselves up to win the next 3 games going into the Christmas break in 2nd place in league. Our players are improving with every training session, and with the addition of a few new players and with Coach Simms joining us, we are very positive for the 2nd half of season.

A busy weekend of basketball!
Saturday 10th December 2011: City of Birmingham 92 Derby Trailblazers 25
CoB started the game very strong going 15-0 up. We ran our fast break well, but need to run lanes wider. By half-time we were 43-12 up. In the second half we tried to run our offence and not just rely on fast breaks.
Defensively we played o.k, but still need to work on our help defence. We got two 24 second counts, and forced Arden into rushed shots.
1st qtr 25-8, 2nd qtr 18-4, 3rd qtr 22-6, 4th qtr 27-7
Sunday 11th December 2011: City of Birmingham 89 Leicester Warriors 29
Some of players were a bit tired after Saturday's game but once we settled down we started to play some good basketball. Again running a good fast break but needing to run wide, and sometimes pass a little earlier.
1st qtr 16-10, 2nd qtr 26-8, 3rd qtr 20-6, 4th qtr 27-5,
On both days we held opposition to 10 points or below in each qtr. In all a good week-end!

19th November 2011: CoB 46  Wolverhampton Slam 53

City of Birmingham U13s had a difficult game on Saturday. It was close all the way through with scores tied several times. We had difficulty finishing with lots of missed easy baskets. Some players on the day had trouble focussing on the game. Defence needs some work - too much reaching in for ball and picking up cheap foul.

Stephen Lycock led the way with some tough defence, he hustled for the ball, and now needs to work on his offence. Omari Smith showed some excellent driving to the basket and now needs to work on his finishing. He had a nose bleed following a knock but showing resilience came back out to play.

1st qtr 11-12  2nd qtr 16-13  3rd qtr 10-10  4th qtr 9-14. All close periods but the 4th was where they won it.

In all the team shows a lot of promise, but if we put in the work we are sure to continue to make progress!

12th November 2011 - Notts Nova U13 v COB U13

Two unbeaten teams meeting.  Notts with a full squad and COB with 8 player, some injured and battered... before we started!
We had a really good day.  The players enjoyed the trip to Notts and did the best they could.  We worked hard but the press from Notts lead to several steals and easy baskets for the home team.  But we kept working hard and earned some respect as we kept the game alive at the half.  Some poor ball movement in the 3rd saw a 8 point turn into a 29 point lead for the home team.  But depite loosing 2 players due to foul trouble and injury, we kept playing hard and played our best in the final quarter despite being tired.  Well done team.
Final Score - Notts Nova 70 COB 40
