City of Birmingham Basketball Club are proud to be running an Under 13 Central Venue League giving children across Birmingham and it's surrounding areas the opportunity to play competitive matches. This league encourages participation and fair play in a competitive environment.
Sunday 12th June saw a fantastic event take place as 4 teams battled for the Under 13 Community CVL Championship.
The first round of fixtures was an excellent start to the day with COB Minis producing a strong display to overturn Bournville Bears 34-12 whilst reigning champions Redditch showed intent with a fine performance to beat challengers Yardley 30-24.
During Round 2 Yardley realised they needed a winning effort to progress and did so with a commanding effort against the inexperienced but vastly improved Bournville Bears 26-6. In the other fixture COB Minis held a slender league for most of the game threatening an upset until the closing stages when the well disciplined and controlled Redditch team came good to take the game 28-22.
The 3rd set of league fixtures produced an exciting finale to the group games. The improving Bournville Bears led by hard working Nathaniel Read and good rebounding from Harry Jones ensured that Redditch had no time to relax. They ran out 24-10 winners but Bournville can be proud of their efforts. With the winners of the COB and Yardley fixture progressing to the final the stakes were high. Yardley started the stronger with Idis and Opaya producing both speed and strength to beat the COB defense. Kelly ensure COB Minis stayed in touch but they were unable to close the 8 point gap Yardley had built up. Yardley eventually ran out winners 30-22.
3rd and 4th Place Play Off - COB Minis v Bournville
As the games progressed to full court both COB and Bournville started the game tired after the previous games. A good start from the young Bournville team looked to give them hope of a stunning victory before a strong COB effort saw them run out worthy winners 22-4. Both teams have a great future!
Final - Yardley v Redditch
This match up saw a repeat fo last season's final when Redditch took the champions crown. There was no doubt that Yardley were hungry for revenge but Redditch were not going to give up the title with out a fight. The game started with both teams trading baskets in a high quality first half. Yardley however began to pull away to lead 9-4 at half time. The second half saw Redditch miss a number of great opportunities to bring the game close whilst Yardley proved more clinical to win 20-8 and be crowned as 2011 Under 13 CVL Champions.
The tournament was a great success with a large number of COB Coaching and Playing staff supporting the event through refereeing and table officiating. The teams produced some outstanding basketball and proved there is a future for COB Basketball!
This event proved further that COB deliver high quality Community Events that Birmingham basketball can be proud of.
